Why should you care about what’s “in” this season?
By Meg | August 7, 2007
I’m not a fashion expert. I admit, I can hardly pronounce the designer names mentioned in fashion magazines, let alone tell you anything about them. I only get as far as I do on the names because I’ve studied a few foreign languages. Therefore, I try to stay away from writing about “fashion”. What I like to write about is “personal style”. It’s about finding out what looks good and sends the intended messages about oneself. Unless the message one wants to send centers around looking trendy, personal style doesn’t change drastically from season on the whims of some designer or writer half a world away.
So, why should you or I care about what’s “in” for this season or the next?
What’s “in” in fashion, is in the stores.
New trends might take a little while to trickle into stores, but soon you’ll be seeing them everywhere. If this season’s trend doesn’t suit you, don’t let anyone convince you that you must wear it to part of the herd. You’ll only be wasting money on clothes that you won’t be able to stand as soon as the trend has past because they never looked good on you to begin with.
However, if the trend does suit you, now is the time to stock up on your favorite items while you have plenty of options in stores. At the height of the trend, you can afford to be very selective thanks to the increased availability in stores. Towards the end of the trend, load up on bargain finds from the clearance racks.
Don’t forget about accessories in this season’s “in” color.
Have you ever tried to find a purse to or belt to match that special shade of blue in those shoes you bought last year but can’t seem to work into an outfit? I have, and without much luck. While, you don’t have to match your accessories, they are a lot easier to wear if you can find several pieces in the same color. Normally, that can be pretty hard to do, but it’s a lot easier if you’re looking for items in the season’s “in” color.
So, if - and that’s a big if - the color is one that you like and that suits you, consider buying several accessories in that color, such as a pair of shoes, a handbag, maybe a belt, and some jewelry. You shouldn’t wear it all at once, but having a larger selection will allow you to mix and match a couple accessories at a time, according to the needs of the outfit.
What trends have you embraced? Personally, I’ve embraced wide, colorful belts worn high on the waist, ballet flats, and wrap dresses. They work well for me. I’ve managed to avoid yellow, though, except for one summer dress where it’s balanced with enough blue.
