Why ruching rocks
By Meg | August 12, 2007
I am in love with ruching (pronounced “roo-shing”). Today I wore a ruched dress during the day, then a ruched top later this evening. Even if you aren’t familiar with the term, you’ve no doubt seen it around. What is ruching? It’s a fabric gathering technique found on everything from tops to shoes and even bags. There are many styles and places for ruching, but a look at the dress on the left or a quick search on Google images will give you the idea if you’re still unsure about what ruching is.
Why is ruching great? Aside from being a detail that can add flair to a piece, it camouflages bumps, puckering, and general unevenness. It can disguise love handles and make a waist look thinner. I like it on tops and dresses to smooth the line between my waist and the bottoms of my ribs (yes, my ribs stick out a bit - despite being slightly over weight at the moment). I also like it on the bottom half of a top or at the waist of a skirt to help with that awkward transition between separates. It also tends to move well on the body because there is room in the fabric to expand and contract as you bend, making it just as popular on gym clothes as on ball gowns. Another bonus - on pieces with ruching like a shirt you can sometimes pull the end down or up, essentially changing the length to suit your body and the rest of the outfit.
So, if you’re looking for versatile pieces that look great and ’smooth’ over figure flaws - look out for pieces with ruching.

I think it deserves it’s own anthem at the very least.

Meg, I don’t remember hearing of ruching before and am glad to learn about it. Our daughter just had a baby (our first grandbaby) and I will share your post with her. In fact, I will write a post about ruching on my blog and put a link to your blog.

Great post, Meg! You hit it right on the nail–ruching is not only a visually interesting, but it’s also key for figure flattery.
