Why I kept my tights after all

By Meg | January 8, 2008

I think footless tights can look really cute on some people. Some people can even rock the mid-calf ones with cute ballet flats. I can’t. I’ve tried, but the proportions just don’t work for me. Maybe my skirts aren’t short enough, or my torso is too long, or my hips are too wide — all I know is that it doesn’t work.

So, I was planning to add my tights to the Goodwill pile when we had our coldest night in half a decade here in Florida. It might have been a good night to stay in, but my husband and I had been invited to our friends’ place for dinner. So, I tucked those black, mid-calf tights into my black lace-up boots (thanks again Mom!), all under a long, black skirt. With the addition of a gray top and some colorful accessories, I had a warm but stylish outfit.

Then when I went for a walk the other day, I paired the same tights with my new brown boots and a long, bohemian skirt so the tights weren’t even visible.

I’ve even worn them at night under my pajamas since we’ve been keeping the thermostat lower.

Now, I’m starting to rethink a few more things in the Goodwill pile — especially if I ever get to work with my sewing machine.

I am addicted to footless tights even though no-one would know it as the tights-and-ballet-flats does nothing for me. I too have been wearing them exclusively under boots for the past 3 years, with socks if it’s cold! Normal tights now feel uncomfortable to me because my feet seem to pull them down/ my toes feel squeezed, and they would often get a hole in the toe. The foot-pulling-down effect made my normal tights baggy. Not any more! Yay footless tights!! I have been smugly thinking only I knew the secret, I’m glad you do too!

Hi Kiran,

It’s nice to know that I’m not the only one, although I understand about liking to think that we have “secrets”. A friend of mine was claiming earlier today about how she showed me to add blush over under eye concealer to make it look more natural — and then I reminded her that my response when she did it the first time in front of me was actually, “Oh, I didn’t know anyone else I knew did that!”.
