What I was wearing and my (non)acceptance speech
By Meg | February 1, 2008
Last night I posted a photo of me waiting anxiously for news about The Fabbies. Unfortunately, news has been almost nonexistent and it appears that the awards ceremony has been postponed, that last night there was a nomination party instead, and that the video of the party won’t be available till next week. That’s bad news for impatient people like me who hate suspense, but that does mean that you can still go vote for The Bargain Queens in the Shopping category.
Last night, I hurried the post out, so now I’ll give you a little more background. As regular readers know, I usually don’t post many photos of myself. However, I did feel pretty fabulous, so I wanted to share — especially because it’s rare that I get to wear formal wear.
The dress is what I wore for my high school prom my senior year (spring 2001 if you’re wondering). I went to prom with the wonderful guy who is now my husband and he actually went dress shopping with me at the mall and even bought the dress in Dillard’s after I got sticker shock. No wonder I married him!
The prom dress has survived many closet purges even though I finally gave my wedding dress to Goodwill. I’ve considered giving it away, but I figured that it’s probably alright to keep one formal gown even if I don’t have anywhere to wear it. And look, I found an excuse to wear it after all! I did something similar years ago for New Years Eve with a friend, but I should do this more often.
I bought the tiara for last Halloween, but I also wore a tiara for prom. It was smaller and not quite as sparkly, so I gave it away when I got the new one.
My shoes, not that you can really see them, are patent leather pumps from Charles David in a beautiful aubergine.
And not that you can really tell from the photo, but my ‘throne’ is a purple velvet chair I got from T.J. Maxx. I’m sitting in it now. It’s ‘my’ chair. I probably would have bought it just because it’s purple velvet and still tasteful, but the real reason I bought it is because it fits me really well. It’s sits higher than most chairs (which is great because I’m tall), the arm rests are at the perfect height for typing on my laptop, and it supports my back, which is a must since I spend a lot of time sitting here and big fluffy recliners just don’t cut it.
You may have noticed my blue nails. That’s Sally Hansen’s Hard as Nail Xtreme Wear nail polish in “Blue It”. I got it the other day at Walgreens for less than $3 and it’s now a favorite along with OPI’s Russian Navy. I just happened to be wearing it yesterday, but I liked the combination enough to leave it on.
And here’s a close up of my face so you can see my makeup (click the thumbnail for an even bigger close up):
I wish I could take credit for such great work, but my friend Brett was the one who did it. He works at a makeup counter and I was in his area yesterday when I got the idea to dress up. So, big thanks to Brett for taking the time to help me feel fabulous!
Also, big thanks to my husband for taking full length pictures — not to mention a million other things I could thank him for. He was remarkably patient, even though I kept having him redo the shot. (As usual, I did the face shot, but my arm only reaches so far and I don’t have a tripod.) He was also a gracious host to our friend M. who came over to hang out last night. He made us all sorts of little snacks, poured us wine, and even got to use his new tetsubin to serve us green tea.
Thanks also to my friend M. for coming over. She was such a sweetie and adjusted my hair for the photos. And of course, we had a wonderful time vegging out.
And of course, thanks to everyone at The Fabbies and The Bargain Queens for giving me an excuse to dress up.

I still have at least one of my prom dresses. I bought one at about $100. The other I got at Goodwill and it was so beautiful.
I’ve also saved a bridesmaid dress—but more on that for Valentine’s Day.

Hi Mrs. Micah!
I think this one was about $114, which seemed like such a fortune at the time since I had bought many of my other dresses at thrift stores prior to that.
I can’t wait to hear about the bridesmaid dress!
