What do your fingernails say about you?
By Meg | October 26, 2007
When making a good impression, details do matter. One detail you shouldn’t overlook is your fingernails. Fortunately, you don’t have to spend a lot of money to have nice nails that help you make a good impression.
Cleanliness
If you don’t do anything else, keep you nails clean. Whether you’re a guy or gal, dirty nails are absolutely not acceptable on dates or at job interviews and are just generally gross. If you’re working in the dirt or with chemicals, use gloves. It’s also healthier for your nails. If you can’t avoid getting some grime underneath your nails, please clean them well afterwards.
Cut
I’m not a fan of very long nails. They seem trashy to me and they’re not very practical. On the other hand, super short nails don’t look healthy. Chewed off nails are even worse. If you chew your nails, the message you send to others is that you are nervous and lack self-control — even if that’s not the case. Chewing your nails can be a hard habit to quit, but its definitely worth making a strong effort to quit. I used to bite my nails, but two things helped me quit: wearing artificial nails for a couple weeks and keeping a nail file nearby from then on to smooth out irritating rough spots. Now I keep my nails at what I consider to be the ideal length, with the white between 1/4″ and 1/2″ long.
Just as important as the length is the tip shape. I like to keep my ends flat or slightly rounded. In both cases I round off the corners. Sharp corners look too artificial to me and long pointed nails are just scary.
Color
While there are many choices to choose from, bright blue nails are rarely appropriate. If you want to look professional, I suggest sticking with a natural look such as a French manicure with soft white tips (also called an American manicure). If your natural nails look nice, you can use clear nail polish alone, or even just cuticle oil. You can use a white nail pencil
to whiten your tips. If you want to use a color polish all over, soft pink nails can also look very classy.
Have Fun
There is a place for fun nail colors. One of the best things about nail polish is that it is removable. So, you can wear sexy red nails to a date Friday night, wear your team’s color on your nails at the game Saturday night, and change back to an office appropriate pale pink by Monday morning. Just remember to give yourself time to change colors in case your boss doesn’t appreciate blue and orange nail polish.

You’re totally right. Unfortunately, mine say that I am a busy girl who has not had time for a proper mani/pedi. Le sigh.

I’ve only had three professional manicures in my life (and one pedicure) and I rarely have time at home to do my own nails and let them dry before I mess them up. That’s probably part of the reason why I like the natural look so much. All you really have to do is keep them clean, cut, and shaped and they’ll look better than most out there — especially since a lot of the people who do get them done professionally get way too crazy with nails that they plan to keep like that for weeks.

And just so nobody thinks that I’m a nail prude, write now I have purple fingernails and toenails with a silver and blue glitter top coat. It’s just for tonight and Halloween, though. Tonight I’m going to an early Halloween party.

I have never gotten a manicure, but make sure to keep them at a reasonable length. I prefer the long tapered look, and I take the time to make sure they look decent before going anywhere important.

Oh my gosh I couldn’t agree more. I’ve had acrylic nails for the past 7 years (only because my nails naturally do not grow) however I keep them short and natural looking and NEVER leave them damaged or in need or repairs.

Thanks Karina!
I really don’t have anything against acrylic nails, its just that sooooo many people overdo it that its almost hard for me to not associate them with Nosferatu nails.
Thanks for stopping by Miss Conception!
So long as they do look decent — which is hard to pull off with the long tapered look since they can be very high maintenance. I trust your judgement, though.

I don’t get it… We do our nails to look good. Who is the audience, and what do they think looks good? I don’t trust my girlfriends or co-workers to tell me what looks good, because they always want to look better than me and they are happiest when they think they do. I trust when they look at me with jealousy in their eyes, and when my man appreciates me.
If I kept my nails short, I would feel like a blue collar worker, and my man would treat me like one… It’s “all about appearances”, hon. Look like you deserve to be treated like a queen, and you will be. That doesn’t mean dragon-lady or whore length - nails should be elegant, but they aren’t “practical” for sure. Smooth curves and a taper are appropriate - the whole point of growing our nails is to lengthen and taper the hand, i.e. look feminine.

Welcome Extraordinary Lady!
I do agree with you when you say “look like you deserve to be treated like a queen, and you will be”. I’m not against long nails, but like you said, not “dragon-lady or whore length”.
I keep mine shorter because I have to be somewhat practical given some of my hobbies. And in some work environments, shorter nails are more acceptable as well as other conservative styles. Perhaps that’s because they are less feminine, sad though that might be.
It’s a shame that you can’t trust your girlfriends, though. I’m very lucky that there isn’t a lot of jealousy between me and my girlfriends. Of course, my man gets the final say, too — most of the time.

Fabulous!
Finally someone saying the same as me. I, for the time being, have 2 mm long nails and am happy with that. As an aspiring Archaeologist, the last thing I would want to be taken for is someone who won’t work much- as long nails give that impression.

Hi Proxy,
Short nails can be great. I play quite a few different musical instruments, so keeping my nails manageable is a necessity.
You’re so right, too; long nails can make the wrong impression depending on the field you’re in.
By the way, I think archaeologists are awesome. Thanks to them, I had plenty to write about in college. Have you thought about where you’d want to work as an archaeologist? Are you interested in any particular cultures or time periods?

I like nails about 1/4 - 1/2″ past the fingertip. I think that looks classy and beautiful.

Hi J! That sounds like the perfect length! I’ve been keeping mine super short since I’ve been wearing a lot of navy polish, but I usually keep them 1/4 - 1/2″ when I wear light or no nail polish.

To each her own, Twilight! I’m not totally against having fun with your nails, but keep in mind that they might not be appropriate depending on where you work and in what field. Definitely take it down a few notches if you’re interviewing somewhere — unless it is a very artistic field.

Speacking from a male point of view. Long beautiful fingernails look so sexy, seductive and alluring and say so much about the women wearing them. Nothing over a 1/2 inch free edge length thou and a nice light color polish or a french mani with a layer or two of a frost or sheer polish overlay adorning them. Ladies your nails are the finishing touch, the icing on the cake that completes the look. It gives you that look of class, elegance and femininity that says treat me like the lady I am. Men DO notice your nails gal’s.

Hi Dave! Thanks for the male perspective!
I think up to half an inch is fine, too. When I think of “long” nails I think of nails that are so long that they start to get in the way of doing thinks like typing. I’ve seen some that are so long that they start noticeably curving around and that just doesn’t look right to me.
