Two morning makeovers: or, why I love makeup and wire cutters
By Meg | February 3, 2008
I hate mornings.
And by mornings, I mean anything before noon. There are good reasons why.
In addition to having to get up out of a nice warm bed, scurry across our cold terrazzo floor, then wait for the shower to warm up, I really don’t care for how I look in the mornings. My face looks more bloated in the morning, the bags under my eyes are more noticeable, and those hot showers that I love so much make my face look flushed and greasy afterwards.
Fortunately, makeup and time do wonders. I realized the importance of time recently when my husband said, “I don’t know what it is, but you look even nicer when you get home.” While I’m sure he missed me, being up and about does help with the bloat and eye bags.
Depending on my options and my mood, choosing my outfit for the day is either one of the best or worst times of my day. I don’t really plan ahead because my mood does affect my outfit a lot. So, every morning it’s a bit of a surprise what I come up with. Sometimes it works great. Sometimes it doesn’t. And sometimes I get really ticked when I come up with a great outfit idea but can’t get the details right.
For example, the other day I was wearing a black wrap dress with small white polka dots. It’s one of my favorites, and I have fun accessorizing it. Last year, I wore it mostly with white ballet flats and a white enamel butterfly necklace, very cutesy.
This year, I’ve leaned more towards a slightly edgier look and on this morning I was wearing it with my Nine West high heel, lace up boots that my mom gave me for Christmas. But I couldn’t figure out what jewelry to wear, which is usually what I do right before doing my makeup.
I started with a black beaded choker, then tried on the matching chandelier earrings. Hmmm….
The earrings have always looked too long to wear with the choker — at least on me. What’s that I once read, never let your earrings and necklace touch? They are such nice pieces, but since they don’t go well with most of my other jewelry, I’ve rarely worn either the earrings or the necklace.
I started to tell my husband how I need to remember to buy some similar earrings in a simpler style when I realized that they’d be perfect if only the chandelier part was removed. So, I asked him to go find his wire cutters while I took some pictures of the earrings.
This photo of me without makeup was taken after one earring had been clipped:
Here’s me and my earrings after our very-quick-because-I-didn’t-plan-this makeovers:
Now you can see why I love makeup and wire cutters!
The before photo was not even close to the worst one I had, but I’m not quite brave enough to show that one. Nevertheless, you can see what I mean by the difference between “natural” and “natural-looking makeup”.
