Tregging trepidation

By Meg | November 16, 2007

P.S., Icy and I were reading each other’s minds again. Check out her thoughts on the subject here.

My husband and I were driving through my college’s parking lot yesterday when we saw a woman walk past in nothing but a sweater and black treggings. And no, the sweater didn’t cover her bum.

If treggings haven’t made it into your style vocabulary list, they’re basically a thicker version of leggings. The name is a cross between “trousers” and “leggings” and they’re sometimes worn as pants, unlike thinner leggings which usually aren’t seen except under dresses, skirts or long tunic tops. Of course, there is a lot of gray area in fashion, especially as to what’s appropriate and when.

Treggings are not for everyone. I’m fairly happy with my figure, but I wouldn’t be caught dead in them seeing as they can show every figure flaw. If you want to see an example of someone successfully wearing treggings, check out Susie at Style Bubble. She can definitely work them.

However, even if they are thick enough and you can work them well, that doesn’t mean that they’re always appropriate to wear. Sure, your skin isn’t showing, but they still reveal a lot — especially in front. And I can’t imagine someone wearing them except in a very dark color. Even in black, they’re definitely not appropriate for work or school in my opinion, unless you are only wearing them during a dance class. Wear them if you want to the gym or at night while clubbing or partying. I don’t recommend wearing them anywhere else, though I might be overlooking some other occasion where they’re alright to wear.

The lady we saw yesterday may have been coming from dance class (it was the right area of campus), but my husband and I both agreed that it just felt wrong to see her out in the parking lot in daylight with nothing over her bum but the treggings. It was awkward, like walking in on someone in the bathroom but turning away before you really see anything. I’m really hoping that the look doesn’t catch on here.
