Thin may be in, but not when it comes to material
By Meg | July 8, 2007
Today I went shopping. Well, actually I went “returning” and did a little shopping while I was still at the stores. I spent less than I got back, so it was a good day. Or maybe it was a bad day because I wouldn’t mind having a few more dresses. Hmmm… I’ll choose “good day”. I did get my first coffee maker, after all.
While standing in line after line making returns, I did a little people watching. I think it’s particularly interesting to take a look at what people are wearing at the different stores. The clothes that are for sale are all about the same whether I’m at Ross or TJ Maxx or Steinmart or the mall (more on this topic later this week). However, the clothes that people are wearing seem to vary between stores. I haven’t exactly conducted a scientific survey, but my theory is that the bigger the discounts, the more chance of running across someone who looks cheap.
What I really noticed today was the thin material being worn, especially at Ross. It was in the mid-90’s Fahrenheit here today, so I don’t expect anyone to be wearing a wool sweater. However, I was plenty comfortable in a short-sleeved dress that flowed cooly around me. So, I was still surprised to see girl after girl wearing light-colored tops that were practically see-through because they were paper-thin. I’m not just talking faint-outline-of-a-bra see-through. I could see their bras, their belly-buttons, and every pit of cellulite. Ick! Come on, this is not sexy. It’s not even summer smart. It’s trashy looking, plain and simple.
Now, maybe you have a top that’s rather thin. You can still wear it. However, you have to be careful what you wear underneath. One girl had a patterned bra. I know because I saw it. That’s tacky - especially midday on a Sunday. At the very least, wear smooth, skin-colored bra. Hopefully, you’ll also wear a nice skin-colored camisole underneath. If you’re creative, maybe you can layer it with other colors, though this is sometimes harder with thin materials because the color of the under-layer might show through and the result is not always pleasant.
I think I’m very open-minded, especially when it comes to clothes, but let me put it this way: if you wouldn’t bare all somewhere, don’t bare the slightly filtered version either.

Oh.. agreed!!!!!! It’s just plain tacky. Or when the shirts are too short and it shows their… blubber, for lack of a better word, and makes them look like overstuffed sausages, even if they’re skinny

Oh yes… the girls I saw weren’t skinny by any means, which did make it worse.

The only other thing I hate more is super short skirts when they have no ‘bidness’ (hee hee) wearing them. This includes young girl preteen girls! Then they go to bend over to pick up something and I swear I can’t look away.. it’s like watching a car wreck, you know it’s awful, you know you DON’T want that image seared into your brain for the rest of the day, but your eyes are glued.
Oh dear I’m bad…

Oh, I don’t think you’re bad to have those thoughts - or even to say them here. If only the right person would politely explain to them how awful and inappropriate their clothing is! (Maybe their parents for starters?) Hopefully, they’ll find and read comments like yours and think about the messages they’re sending.
