The teapot that changed my drinking habits

By Meg | January 4, 2008

I’ve seen several bloggers recommend tea makers as a frugal kitchen appliance, but I always thought it was a silly idea. After all, it doesn’t take much to boil some water and steep some tea bags, whether you’re making a single serving or a batch of sweet tea for your family.

Yet despite that, I was still buying pre-made sweet tea at the grocery store and I hardly ever drank hot tea, despite having boxes of the stuff in the cabinet. I always ended up making a mess while taking out the dripping teabags, and I could never decide where to put the bag when I took it out of my cup since I like to use them to make an extra cup.

In the lead up to Christmas, I was looking for products to feature in my post Cheap gift ideas: For the tea drinkers at The Bargain Queens. One thing I came across was the ingenuiTEA dispensing teapot by Adagio. It got great reviews, and I decided to get one of the 32 ounce teapots to try since it has a built-in infuser and I want to try loose teas.

I opened the box and wondered, it that all there is? There was no product information inside the box, just the teapot, fully assembled, and a small plastic tray it sits on. The instructions were on the side of the box and said something to the effect of, “1. Heat water. 2. Add tea and steep. 3. Serve by sitting the teapot on top of a cup or pitcher.

This thing is way too easy to use. Plus, it’s microwave and dishwasher safe.

But I’m not writing this just because it’s a great product. It’s a great product that has seriously changed my drinking habits. I’ve been drinking tea constantly and stopped buying the pre-made stuff. Even more remarkable, my husband is now addicted to green tea and has almost stopped drinking Coke entirely. This thing will likely pay for itself within a week, maybe two at the most.

The moral of this story? Buy an easy to use product and you can save money no matter how lazy you are.

The only problem is when my husband and I both want to use it to make different kinds of tea.

Here’s my action shot:

Yes, that’s a tea bag. I’m trying to use up some of my bagged tea. And while it works great with loose tea, cleanup is even simpler with bags.

If you want one, here’s where you can buy the ingenuiTEA dispensing teapot by Adagio.

I hope the steamer/rice cooker I ordered turns out to be as helpful. If so, then I’ll definitely have to thank Fabulously Broke in the City for the idea.

I am in love with teapots. I really really love the ones with mesh cups for loose tea because I’m a huge loose tea fan, but like you, the bagged stuff is easier to cleanup (although the taste is not quite there)…

You would probably adore this teapot then, because you can use it with loose or bagged tea and it is sooooo easy to clean up either way.

We also bought a Japanese tetsubin with matching cups because my husband has been wanting one for about a year. It hasn’t arrived yet, but it has an infuser, too. I’m really curious to see which we use more. I have a hunch, but it’ll still be nice to have something to make the tea extra special — especially since we’re drinking it so often now.

I wish I had a cup of hot tea right now. There’s a big storm here and I’m cuddled in bed.

Hi Valley Girl,

Yes, tea can be very comforting as well as delicious. I like rain, but definitely not big storms. Cuddled up in bed is the perfect place to wait them out, though.
