The importance of good lighting
By Meg | June 6, 2007
I can’t tell you how many times I did my makeup in front of my bathroom mirror and was then horrified with the results when I checked my face in the car. Foundation that looked flawless under fluorescent lighting now made my face look like it was covered in a pink rash, especially compared with my normal colored neck. Fluorescent lights simply do not show color the same was as natural light and non-fluorescent lights. While we may spend a lot of time in fluorescent lights, it is important to check makeup in natural lighting.
The best time to check is when you first purchase your make-up, especially concealers and foundation. If you have your makeup done at a counter, go outside with a mirror before making any purchases. If you buy your makeup without trying it on, check store return policies first. A lot of stores, like Walgreens, will accept returned makeup with a receipt even if you have opened it up and tried it. (I wish I had known that years ago when I would try to make the wrong makeup work rather than throw it out.) Before going out, test your new makeup in the sun on your neck (concealers and foundations should blend well with your neck unless you want to look like you have a mask on).
When applying makeup at home, try to let in as much natural light as possible while making sure that you have plenty of light overall. Some mirrors, like the one featured above, have various light settings that let you see your face under different lighting.
Anyone have any horror stories of their own? How do you ensure good lighting? Also, has anyone used one of the lighted mirrors like the one featured here? Does it help?

I sometimes wear a bit too much cherry red lip gloss. I don’t realise in my bedroom since it’s pretty dim, but then when I go outside it’s like PHWOAR! and totally doesn’t go with my outfit. But I never wear foundation or concealer so I’ve never had that particular problem, thankfully!
