That outfit makes me happy
By Meg | July 29, 2007
I can’t believe that I’ve been home from London for over a week. I’ve already mentioned my roommate there a few times, even though we were only roommates for a week and we didn’t really know each other before. I was really lucky not just that got along, but also that she helped to make the trip bearable (along with the help of a couple other new friends). All in all, I would say that my entire group had a remarkable talent for coming up with great, witty quotes. There was one quote from my roommate that struck me in particular. Several times as we went past someone wearing a fun, colorful outfit in the masses of neutral-clothed London, my roommate would proclaim with a grin, “That outfit makes me happy.”
So far I’ve tended to focus here on creating a more polished, classy look. However, my roommates quote reminded me that there is definitely a place for more eccentric outfits. I have several friends that I look forward to seeing in the local clubs because I can’t wait to see what they come up with next. (And yes, I’ve been known to dress a bit out there in appropriate venues.) What do I like to see (even if I don’t wear/do it myself)? You might not know it if you saw how much black and white I wear, but I love color, like in brightly dyed hair, tights, chunky jewelry - you name it. While I’m not dying my own hair pink any time soon, I am trying to add some more color to my closet. I also like clothing and accessories that are influenced by other times or cultures like corsets, saris, tiaras, long gloves, lace skirts, veils, and big hats. Of course, I couldn’t talk about fun outfits without mentioned Gala over at iCing. If you haven’t been to her blog, you’re missing out. Her outfits always make me smile :)
I’m not saying to wear electric blue tights to the office, but that doesn’t mean you can’t have fun with your style when out and about. Yes, there can be consequences, especially if you’re older and probably have more at stake. Don’t expect to be taken very seriously if you wear hot pink go go boots to a job interview at a bank. However, the point of eccentric fashion isn’t to be taken seriously. It’s to have fun and show off your creativity. So, step outside your comfort zone and break the rules once in awhile. You might just brighten someone’s day - and maybe your own.
Readers, what styles make you happy to wear or see? What advice would you offer to someone looking to bring some fun to their wardrobe?

I think what makes me smile is usually someone who has put their outfit together well in a way that suits the individual. In a word, congruence.
That said, I do love color.

Definitely! Even when putting together a lot of flashy pieces, it’s still important to consider the outfit as a whole and how it flatters the person wearing it. It can be a challenge with neutrals even, but it definitely gets harder when you add more colors and wilder styles.
It’s nice to see people who don’t let that stop them, though. I have a lot of respect for people who can put together wild outfits that really work for them. It’s definitely a talent.
