Thankful for the stuff
By Meg | November 23, 2007
Happy Thanksgiving everyone and thanks for reading! I’m also very thankful for my friends and family, and especially for my wonderful husband. However, I hope they all already know that I appreciate them (and not just today), so I’d like to take a moment and say that I am thankful for all the stuff.
Yes, you read that right. I am thankful for things — particularly fabulous clothes and accessories. I’m thankful for my great hats, my wickedly high heels, and everything in between.
Now, if you don’t know me, you might think that I’m materialistic or shallow for saying this (and goodness knows what those Puritan pilgrims would say about me). After all, I’m supposed to say that I’m thankful for all the big, important things like family, friends, a home, food, freedom, etc. And I am thankful for all that and more. But you know what, the little things matter, too. This past year, I’ve learned that it’s not enough just to not sweat the small stuff, you have to also appreciate the small stuff, especially the little things that you spend every day with like clothes and accessories.
After all, what good is having stuff unless you enjoy it? I know people with four times as many clothes as I have who don’t enjoy wearing them half as much as I do. Somehow, having fun with what you wear became mixed up with plain ol’ vanity. But I say, it can be a way of being grateful. I’m grateful that I have so many options. I’m grateful that I can express myself with my clothes. I’m grateful for clothes that make me look thinner. And I’m very grateful for the confidence and lift that a great outfit can give me.
So, thank you to all the people behind the stuff that makes my wardrobe possible. Thanks especially to the great designers out there who have made clothes for real women and not just to be works of art. Thanks to Isaac Mizrahi for making affordable clothes that are still stylish. Thanks to Diane Von Furstenberg for making the wrap dress such a big hit. Though I’ve never owned on of hers, the style has become a wardrobe staple for me and many other women. Thanks to Cole Haan for making gorgeous, but comfortable shoes. I haven’t yet had the pleasure of experiencing them first hand, either, but maybe he and Isaac Mizrahi will team up some day and make a line for Target. Thanks also to Betmar for making cute hats that I can afford. They’ve done wonders for my style and I’ve gotten too many compliments to count (including many on the tweed cloches).
And thank goodness that Thanksgiving only comes once a year — otherwise I’d have buy a completely new wardrobe every year to contain my expanding waist line! But since it only comes once a year, I can happily say, thanks Mom and Mom2 for being such great cooks!

We all have so much to be thankful for, Thanksgiving should be every day. I am especially thankful for my family and the talents/gifts that the Good Lord has blessed them with.
