Sushi in

By Meg | January 14, 2008

Last Saturday my husband and I were supposed to eat lunch out with a couple friends. I was really looking forward to it, but unfortunately our plans fell through because two of us forgot that we had a last minute rehearsal to go to Saturday, right around lunch time. I was disappointed that we didn’t get to meet up with our other friend from out of town, but we still had a great time Saturday night, thanks in part to a suggestion from Fabulously Broke in the City.

After Fabulously Broke in the City wrote her post on making food for cheaper at home, I started thinking about what it would take to make my own veggie sushi. It took a bit of shopping around, but I finally found all the ingredients. Fortunately, I had recently bought a steamer so I can now make perfect sushi rice. I also bought silicone sushi mat. It was just a few bucks more than the traditional bamboo mats, but easier to use and clean.

So, my husband, our friend, and I ended up making sushi at our place — and for a whole lot cheaper than eating out. Plus, it was fun and we got to use our new coffee table and new dishes.

Now I’ll admit, my husband did most of the work, though I did the shopping, put the goods on the counter, and googled him a link to a page on how to make sushi. I’ve learned to stay out of our cramped kitchen and supervise from afar. Our friend did brave the kitchen, though, and tried her hand at rolling the sushi (and did a marvelous job I might add).

And the great thing about eating in, we get to choose what to watch on t.v. — which ended up being figure skating.

All in all, it turned out to be a wonderful, but cheap evening with delicious food and great company. I must say, this “eating in” thing is really growing on me.

Would you mind linking to the page you used for directions? This is someting I’ve thought of doing before too but never have managed to get all the ingredients together. A site with a good set of directions would be a huge help. glad you had a fun day!

Here’s where we got the info on how to make the sushi rice:

I don’t remember what other sites we consulted, but making the rice was the hardest part. The rest was mostly trial and error (and trying to remember to use less of everything in order to get bite-size pieces).
