Summer bottoms
By Meg | May 15, 2007
It’s been in the 80s and 90s (Fahrenheit) where I live and I’ve been ready to ditch my long pants for something cooler. Normally I don’t wear regular shorts. Looking around town, there are a lot of women wearing short shorts and few can pull them off. First off, shorts are very casual and hard to dress up. Also, they tend to ride up which doesn’t look nice at all. It is no wonder, then, that Busy with Style entitled a recent post “Unfortunately - Shorts“.

Instead of shorts, I tend to wear dresses or skirts. Not only do they transition well between day and evening wear, I tend to feel better about myself when I am dressed up. Skirts and dresses are not the only options nowadays, though. Fortunately, not all shorts are super short. For casual wear, we now have bermuda shorts, cropped pants, capris, skimmers, gauchos, etc. Personally, I almost always prefer these styles to short shorts. Some of the longer styles like capris can be hard to pull off if you’re short, but there are plenty of lengths to experiment with.
There are also some dressier styles such as the pair of dark-wash jean crop pants I found recently at Stein Mart. However, I’m still on the fence about any sort of capri pantsuits for business wear - as are many of the people I’ve talked to in the area. They are tempting here in the heat and the look is growing on me, but be aware that many people still think that they are too casual for a professional office. If you are not prepared to make a few waves, skirt suits
are still great - and cool - office wear.
I’m curious, what do you think of the various short styles as office wear? If you have worn them, have you gotten any flak from others?
