Spinlash: Skeptic to spoiled
By Meg | April 28, 2008
Disclaimer: I did receive a the Spinlash from the company free of charge with the understanding that I would review it. However, the company has at no time given me any type of input in regards to the type of review, I have received no other compensation for this review, and I don’t get any money from sales. As with all my reviews, this review is my honest opinion.
I have a love hate relationship with mascara. I like a little on my top lashes because my lashes are really long but, like the rest of my hair, very fine. A little mascara does wonders for my lashes. Sometimes, though, I feel like it’s more trouble than it’s worth. Even the best mascaras I’ve tried clump — despite all the ads saying otherwise. And while I’ve gotten pretty good at using a mascara comb, picking out clumps of mascara isn’t my ideal way to spend time. And to top it all off, I often end up with mascara spots on my skin despite my best efforts to avoid them.
When I heard about Spinlash. I was intrigued but skeptical. A mascara wand with a revolving wand is not something that I would have bought myself. Goodness knows, I have enough failed gadgets in the yardsale pile. However, I got a freebie — and you know how I hate to turn down freebies. Moreover, my experience has been that if companies are willing to hand out freebies for people to try, they’re pretty confident in their product and that really says something.
Well, I tried it today. The packaging was a little nuts and I kept worrying that I’d throw away something that was important, but the Spinlash itself was really easy to use. You stick the brush side in the cap to release the mascara, then hit one of the buttons to start it spinning up against your lashes. There are two buttons so that you can spin the brush in either direction so that you can hold it in either direction and do both top and bottom lashes. It’s seems like a simple feature, but I could see how annoying it would be if they hadn’t done this.
Despite being a bit eye-shy, I felt really comfortable using the Spinlash. The brush turns very slowly, so it’s easy to control.
I must admit, I was really impressed by how well it worked. Clumps were brushed out easily, leaving a perfect application in seconds. You can even use it with other mascaras to brush out clumps. And what I really noticed was how it helped gently lift my eyelashes. It looked almost like I had used an eyelash curler. (I still want to try one of those heated curlers, though, if any companies are listening. Hint. Hint.)
I was really hoping to find some negatives to point out. Of course, it’s one more thing to buy and one more thing to store (though it’s not huge or anything). And I don’t know how it well it will work down the road. Nevertheless, I was really impressed — even with the price. I was expecting it to cost at least $20, and I could definitely see places selling this for as much as $50, at which point it would be out of price range for sure. (O.k., free was my price range in this case, but yours may differ.) So I was surprised to see that it retails for under $15. Not bad!
The verdict? It’s not a must have, especially if you’re trying to cut down on spending, but for the gal who wants that perfect mascara application, it’s a great product at a very reasonable price. In fact, I will go so far as to say that it may even save me money in the long run since I can see myself buying cheaper mascara in the future since I know longer have to worry about mascara clumps. Bravo, Spinlash!

Hmm, interesting. I’m a mascara junkie (dramatically dark lashes, but so stubby) but I pretty much abhor all of the gadgets. I’ve had one of those heated eyelash curlers (”eh” is my official review) and tried probably twenty or thirty different mascaras. Right now I’m using the step 1 from Maybelline Intense XXL with Rich Black Max Factor Lash Perfection. This Spinlash sounds fun but like something I’d get sick of pretty quickly.

I’m not normally a gadget person, either, so I understand.
I do have one complaint now, though. The mascara it comes with seems prone to moving around. I ended up with raccoon eyes both times I used it — thank goodness I wasn’t in public! I want to try it with my other mascara sometime, but I haven’t gone out a lot at all lately.

I really liked the SpinLash! It does move very slowly so it’s not some crazy machine in your face. But the mascara that comes with it is not worth using. I also had MAJOR raccoon eyes! When using with your own mascara, apply with the mascara’s stock wand then spin the SpinLash through to lengthen and separate. Good Luck!

Agreed! The mascara was definitely the problem. It works fine my own mascara, but that means cleaning the brush everytime if I use the top on the Spinlash.
I’ve heard that the new ones have better mascara, but I haven’t tried one yet. And hopefully they work out something with that top so that you can choose not to reapply the mascara.
