Spending to save, or why I’m a bit kitchen obsessed right now

By Meg | January 15, 2008

As a self-described microwave queen, I have to laugh a bit at how many food and kitchen-related posts I’ve been writing. Don’t worry, I still plan on writing plenty of fashion/style related posts here, even though I’m writing a lot on that topic over at The Bargain Queens. However, I’m really excited to be writing on the topic of food because I’m finally seeing how my husband and I can enjoy the “experience” while saving money.

You see, my husband and I have always enjoyed eating out. In fact, a lot of our debt stemmed from a time when we ate out nearly every meal. That was also the time when we had a kitchen so small as to be barely usable. Our current kitchen seems huge in comparison, though we are in the middle of turning our back room into a new kitchen and dining area.

However, renovations aren’t cheap, so we’re having to go slowly and cut back on our other expenses. So far, I’ve cut back considerably on apparel and beauty expenses, but I’ve been looking for other areas to cut — which is getting harder and harder since we’ve cut back in a lot of areas already. Then it hit me; if we could just eat in more, we’d save a lot of money, which we could then use to do up our new kitchen.

To facilitate that, we’ve actually been spending more on kitchen appliances, gadgets, and dishes. It might sound silly, but it’s working. We’re spending less eating out because we actually want to use our new stuff. I’m getting my shopping fix and it doesn’t take a whole lot of eating in for kitchen stuff to pay for itself! Plus, our current kitchen is finally turning into a place where we actually like to be, especially after we decluttered it Saturday. Instead of feeling deprived, we’re really enjoying eating at home.

I’ve already mentioned some of the goodies we’ve bought in previous posts, but I look forward to writing up a summary when we get a few more things in. I must say, I’m really happy with what we’ve received so far. We have bought just about everything through Amazon, so I get to see reviews before I buy things. I can’t stress how important that is with kitchen appliances because so many are crap by the looks of it.

Here are a few kitchen products that I can whole-heartedly recommend and have already written about:

And here are some items we recently purchased that I will likely be writing on in the future:
