Trinny and Susannah Take on America

By Meg | September 28, 2007

Trinny and Susannah are the authors of one of my favorite style books, What Not to Wear, so I was eager to have a look at their other books. I was especially intrigued by the title of this one - Trinny and Susannah Take on America: What Your Clothes Say About You. Yes, we Americans are known worldwide for our lack of style. What was it that Tim Gunn called it? “The slobification of America.”

In this book, Trinny and Susannah take on the stereotypes of American women with poor style and give them a makeover. You know the types: the stay at home mom that has let herself go, the woman screaming to be noticed, the fashion victim, those who dress too young or too old, and so on. In addition to being a book of style advice, this book is also meant to serve as a wakeup call. I particularly like the sections labeled “How others see you” and “What I say… What I really feel inside…” It emphasizes that point that clothes do send a message.

However, this book is a bit is a bit light on substance. If you’re looking for style advice, I recommend going straight to What Not to Wear. And while this book is a wake up call, if you’re reading it then you probably already know that you need to change your style (or you just like a reminder that your style really isn’t that bad compared to some people). Still, it is a fun book and worth checking out if you like reading about style and makeovers.

Actually, my favourite style book is this red hardcover one called the The Pocket Stylist by Kendall Farr.

I LOVE love love that book…

Glad you mentioned that! I’m reading it right now. So far, I’m in total agreement with you.

I thought “It’s So You” by Mary Sheehan Warren was a great help in creating a flattering wardrobe that works. I’ve streamlined my wardrobe following her advice, and it’s so much easier to pull the right things together and get going in the morning.

P.S. to post above about “It’s So You” - I find my shopping to be much easier now too. I’m not distracted by categories of clothing that really aren’t good for me (i.e., printed skirts, brown clothes, V-necks). Cuts shopping time in half!

Welcome Kelly!

I’ll have to check that out! I definitely agree with you on shopping and getting dressed. Both are so much easier if you know what to buy and then only buy what’s flattering.

ooo! I’ll put that on my “to browse” list…

I’m always on the lookout for GOOD style/fashion books.

Angie @ youlookfab has a set of awesome books on her right-hand side bar that I’ve been meaning to thumb through in Chapters.

Yeah, I definitely have to check those out, too. I’ve been loading up at the local library. Be prepared for more reviews ;)
