How to Be a Budget Fashionista

By Meg | August 5, 2007

Disclaimer: I did receive this book free of charge from the author with the understanding that I would review it. However, the author has at no time given me any type of input in regards to the type of review. As with all my reviews, the review is my honest opinion.

I just finished reading How to Be a Budget Fashionista and I have well over a dozen sticky notes marking sections that I found particularly interesting. I love sticky notes, but I’m rather frugal about using them, so the number I used is definitely a good sign. In fact, I did learn a lot from this book, despite the fact that I already consider myself a bit of a budget fashionista. The book, however, covers a wide variety of topics such as where and when to shop, what to spend more money on, finding your personal style, budget beauty projects, and the importance of great accessories.

As the title of the book indicates, this book is not just about saving money, but rather about being a “budget fashionista”, which the author Kathryn Finney defines as “someone who effortlessly combines personal style with financial savvy.” This book is definitely for those of us who love clothes and love to shop. If you’re just looking for the cheapest clothes you can find, then you will likely be disappointed with this book since some of the budget brands mentioned are far from cheap. Hopefully you’ll come around, though, since this book will give you tips that will help you get more from your clothes. If you’ve read my post, Can’t Afford to NOT Be Picky - Looking Great on a Budget, then you know that I believe that “buying awful clothes is a waste of money”. That’s why this book focuses on quality just as much as price, which means there is plenty of advice on getting real bargains.

My only big criticism is that the book does leave me wanting more. The book covers a lot of different topics but in several sections I wish the author had gone a little deeper. Of course, I understand that there is a limit to how much an author can reasonably put in a book. Hopefully, there will be more books to come. In the meantime, we are fortunate that the author has her own blog, The Budget Fashionista, which is updated regularly. It’s really a great blog, with plenty of tips and bargains. It’s on my blogroll and I have the RSS feed on my Netvibes page.

If you’re interested in looking great for less (and I should think you are), then check out this book and the author’s blog. You won’t be disappointed. Don’t just take my word for it, check out the book on Amazon.com. At the time of this posting, there are 41 buyer reviews and the average rating is 5/5 stars. (That’s really impressive when you consider that many other well known style books do not have such great ratings.)

Let me know what you think!
