Glamour’s Big Book of Dos & Don’ts
By Meg | September 25, 2007
I originally picked up this book thinking that it would just be a guilty-pleasure read, full of ‘well, at least I’m not dumb enough to wear that…’ photos. After all, sometimes it’s nice to know that I’m not the only one to make awful style mistakes (though a lot less recently - I hope). However, Glamour’s Big Book of Dos & Dont’s turned out to be a lot, lot more.
The people at Glamour have really gone above and beyond with this book. With photos of real, un-posed people, they show what to wear and what definitely NOT to wear. Then they actually explain why things work or don’t, and give recommendations based on body shape and situation. It’s What Not to Wear on steroids! I especially like the advice sections entitled “The Rules”. For example, rule #7 of “The Rules for Work” says:
Dress for the job you want, not the one you have. Pay attention to what your boss wears and echo it. And once you’ve mastered that look, set your sights higher: What’s you boss’s boss-or the most senior woman in your company-got on?
If I could only recommend one book on style, this would definitely be my top choice so far. This book is fun, informative, and fluff-free.
