Posing for photos: Part I, Say cheesy

Other posts in the Posing for Photos series:

Recently I was at my great-aunt’s 90th birthday party. As with most large family gatherings, there were lots of photos being taken. As with most large family gatherings, there also a lot of photos being taken that could have been a lot better.

I like taking photos of people and I think I do a pretty good job for an amateur. I think it’s sad, though, that some people run for cover the moment that a camera comes in view. Obviously, they don’t think they are very photogenic. I understand. There are some photos of me that I hope never see the light of day again. However, I have picked up a few posing tips along the way that have helped me take better photos of others and be more photogenic myself.

First off, smile. In most types of photos you should be smiling. If you don’t, you’ll risk looking too serious and tire. Even if you are wearing braces or should get them, it is almost always better to smile than to frown. As I said in Your Best Accessory, smiling doesn’t come naturally for some people so it is a good idea to practice your smile. If you don’t follow any other bit of advice here, just try smiling.

That said, the rest of my suggestions will revolve around one simple fact. Photos are two-dimensional. Stay tuned for details.

Meanwhile, how do you get yourself to smile for photos? Is there anything that you think about in particular?
