Playing in the dirt
By Meg | March 25, 2008
Maybe it’s just that time of year, maybe it’s the urge to recession-proof our food supply, but my husband and I have gardening on the brain right now. We recently started a compost pile and have started clearing a corner of our lot for a veggie garden. And while I certainly wasn’t embarrassed to do so, I had casually wondered what the neighbors would think of us and our plans for the back yard.
Turns out, the couple behind us is way ahead of us. I had just told my husband that we should go ahead and buy a few seedlings so that we didn’t start too late in the season, when one of the neighbors asked if we knew anyone who might want the seedlings that she was planning to thin out of her garden. Turns out, they have a veggie garden full of all sorts of seedlings for all my favorite vegetables. They also have their own compost pile. They even have a couple chickens. Turns out, in this area we can have up to two “pet” chickens — and you can bet that we’ll have a couple soon now that we know that.
The really lucky surprise was that they have a tiller, which they are letting us borrow. Since we’ve been doing that sort of thing by hand, we’re absolutely ecstatic that we can borrow it.
But perhaps best of all, it’s nice to get to know our neighbors and realize that we have more in common than a fence line.
And in related news, rain boots are great for gardening.

PS- Marigolds between plants allegedly helps keeps away insects. Miss J always does it.
