Our weekend cat-astrophe

By Meg | December 26, 2007

Normally I think of saving as a way to buy more for less. This weekend, though, I was reminded about the importance of having a savings account — and about what really matters when it comes to spending.

I recently posted that I’d be shifting the focus of the blog. One of the inspirations for this, one of the “recent circumstances” I alluded to, was what happened this weekend to our kitty Felix. He was sick this weekend and gave us quite a scare. We spent Saturday night/Sunday morning taking him to and from the after hours pet clinic. He avoided surgery, but we still spent nearly a grand on vet bills.

There are lots of ways that I could have spent that money, but I’m glad that we had it — thanks mostly to the wise budgeting of my husband — because I wouldn’t trade our Felix for a million dollars, much less some designer shoes.

Now our home renovations are on hold and we’re trying to cut back our spending more than ever, but we’re both just happy to have our kitty home safe and sound, purring up a storm as he kneads his favorite pillow.
