Not traveling in style

By Meg | September 7, 2007

A 23 year-old woman traveling on Southwest airlines should have read my series on traveling in style. The airlines told her to adjust her skirt before she could fly, because she showed up in a mini-skirt that was too short. You can see her outfit for yourself on this CNN video. Frankly, it’s not the worst I’ve seen by far and I’m actually a bit surprised that the airlines said anything. Apparently, someone had complained, though. That makes me think that perhaps she was sitting in such a way that revealed more than we see with her standing up (a good reason to always do a sit test before wearing a skirt out).

I’m not condoning her outfit by any means. I don’t believe that planes are an appropriate place for ultra-revealing clothes. Besides, the outfit as a whole wasn’t sexy - or even flattering. However, I strongly wish that the airlines didn’t have to be the fashion police (but apparently they do).

I wonder, if a guy was dressed inappropriately (chest hair showing, and/or tight speedo short shorts), would he be asked to leave as well? Or cover up with a blanket?

I don’t think she looked that awful compared to what some girls wear (see through, too tight with rolls, panty whaleback thongs showing)..

But you’re right - maybe she acted, bent over, or sat in a way that made others uncomfortable, and someone on the plane complained…. someone who’s business was worth more than hers. :\

It’s a bit ironic, though, considering the length of skirt the Southwest flight attendants used to wear. (See Manolo’s blog for pics.)

Yeah, CNN actually interviewed a “feminist” who asked pretty much the same question. I’d like to think they would. Personally, I find guys in short shorts more icky than girls.

I was thinking about the pictures I saw of her outfit. If you look closely at the waist of the skirt under the tank, I believe her skirt is actually pulled down a lot lower than it is supposed to be for the photo and the tank top is pulled down to keep that from showing (another reason why everything looks so unflattering). I believe the skirt as she originally wore it was a lot shorter looking, but that in the picture she pulled it down.

I also think of the way I sit in those uncomfortable airline seats - usually with legs tucked up a bit. If I wore a short skirt, it would be a straight shot to you know where. Fortunately, I wear knee-length dresses when I travel, and then also cover with a blanket.

Welcome Deja Pseu!

Thanks for the tip! I found the pics and they are definitely ironic! They remind me of something out of the original Star Trek ;)

catching on at the end, but you’ll notice that she couldn’t sit for the picture without crossing her legs AND putting her hands in her lap. “if it were a man” bs! if a man got on a plane with a hole in his crotch and his balls hanging out, i would bet the same thing would have happened.

Welcome and good call, Jeanettera! And by crossing her legs, she shows off a whole lot of upper thigh.

I admit, I do cross my legs, but I’ve always been told by the matriarchs of my family that to cross one’s legs was unlady-like - and bad for circulation. One should sit up straight with the legs together, though ankles may be crossed. After watching her little show, I’m beginning to see why (though I know that they wouldn’t have approved of a skirt twice that length, either).
