My favorite holiday

By Meg | October 23, 2007

The other day I went outside and I detected just a hint of crispness in the humid Florida air. Finally, a sign that cooler weather is on its way — and with it, the anticipation of the holiday season! My favorite holiday? It’s the first big one of the season. There’s no doubt about it; Halloween is my favorite holiday. Here’s why.

Costumes

You might have already guessed this, but I’m a rather creative person and I like dressing up. It should be no surprise, then, that I love costumes. I’ve had the dress for my Halloween costume since I found it on clearance at the end of prom season. My husband and I usually come up with his costume the week, or even day, of Halloween. We’ve come up with some interesting costumes including a “wiring closet” (him covered in computer cables) and “partly cloudy with a chance of rain” (him holding a spray bottle and wearing a blue shirt with cotton ball clouds pinned onto it).

Candy — specifically chocolate.

I’m a chocoholic. I really don’t need an excuse to eat chocolate, but free chocolate tastes even better somehow.

Candy Apples

If I’m going to eat an apple, it might as well be covered in chocolate, nuts, and caramel.

Parties

Halloween parties rock. Sure it’s great to spend time with family at Thanksgiving and Christmas, but nothing makes me feel like a kid again like spending time with friends high on sugar, wearing funny costumes, and playing ridiculous games.

Pumpkins

I love pumpkins. I love designing jack-o-lanterns and carving them. I love lighting candles in them and smelling fresh pumpkin fill the house. I love eating pumpkin seeds. I love all the pumpkin flavored products out in stores.

Giving out candy

One of my favorite Halloween rituals is giving candy to the neighborhood kids. They’re absolutely adorable — and I love to hear the parents of the young kids teach them how to say “please” and “thank you”.

O.k., I admit, I’m not into the spookier side of Halloween (yeah, I know some Halloween purists just gasped). I’m not a big fan of scary movies or haunted houses. I don’t need any more fodder for nightmares. But all the rest of the holiday festivities more than make up for the week long scary horror movie marathons.
