How to apply eyeshadow: 10 Tips and tricks I wish I knew 20 years ago

By Meg | August 5, 2007

This week I think I’ve seen both the worst and best in-person eyeshadow use of my life. Recently, I posted Just Say No to Clown Lips - When Lip Liner Goes Bad, in which I said:

I can look past bad shoes, and even a bad outfit, but bad makeup is hard to ignore because we are drawn to look at faces, especially when talking to someone.

Well, next bad lips, my next makeup pet peeve is probably bad eye shadow. Personally, I’m happy to see fewer and fewer ’smoky eyes’. Some people can pull it off, but I remember seeing a certain famous blonde on t.v. who looked like a raccoon that then got punched in the eyes. The image is unfortunately burned into my memory.

So, I’m very happy to pass on a link to How to Apply Eyeshadow - 10 Tips and Tricks I wish I knew 20 Years Ago from About.com: Beauty. “Secret #1: Blending is Key” is a special gem since it actually combines several useful tips. Among them is that the key to great eye shadow is using several colors, placing them right for your eye shape, and then blending them well with a brush. If you are still using the sponge applicator that came with your eye shadow and then using it to cover your lid in just one shade… well, please stop, read the tips on that page, and consider stopping by a makeup counter such as Prescriptives or MAC to see how a makeup artist applies shadow. Trust me, your eyes deserve better.

You can tell me.. was it Charlize Thereon? :P She scared me one day, when I looked at a pic of her and her raccoon eyes…

LOL! I bet that was terrible!

No, it was one of the younger crowd. If memory serves me, I believe it was Christina Aguilera - though quite a few of her Hollywood peers have been equally as guilty. Whoever it was, she should have fired her makeup artist. It went well beyond typical smoky eyes. Raccoon eyes are definitely scary. They’re even worse with blonde hair, if you ask me.
