It’s a say something hat day
By Meg | October 2, 2007
When you’re done here, check out my newer additions at It’s another say something hat day.
It was just within the past year that I discovered hats - not baseball caps, but large, fancy, feminine, My Fair Lady hats. It happened by accident, while trying on hats for fun. Then I looked in the mirror with one particular white hat and fell in love with the look. Since then, I’ve bought four more hats and they’ve become a signature look for me when I want to dress up or just add some glam. I’m always pleasantly surprised by the positive attention I get when I wear my hats. I like how my hats allow me to feel both demure and the center of attention at the same time. Not to sound too proud, but I get lots of compliments whenever I go out wearing one of my hats and it has been a great conversation starter. I’m happy to see that hats are a big trend this fall, but I’ll keep wearing them whatever the fashion may be.
Since some of you have asked, here’s my hat collection starting with the one that started it all, a white tea hat that I’ve worn to a couple weddings and my great-aunt’s 90th birthday party. These are thumbnails, so please click on the photos if you want a better view.
My second hat I bought because I absolutely loved the color. Unfortunately, it’s been harder to wear than the others, in part due to the color. I did manage to wear it for Easter, though.
The following was my third hat, which has already made its internet début since I wore in London and while touring a garden sans makeup. I’ve also worn it to a few parties and my sister’s graduation. Fortunately, it’s safe to pack since its crushable.
My favorite color is purple, so I was instantly drawn to this newsboy style cap that I got just last month. Fortunately, it’s a lot easier to wear in casual settings, so I hope to get plenty of use out it.
Finally, the newest edition to my hat collection is this green suede newsboy style cap. I love how it’s the same color as my eyes. I also loved that it was less than $10. Thank goodness for Ross! All the others came from Stein Mart and, while reasonably priced, were not quite so cheap.
I hope you enjoyed my hat collection. Please feel free to leave comments. I’m very curious to see if any of you prefer one over the other. I still don’t know which is my favorite.

What a super idea! I love that you’ve shared your hat collection with us. Do you mind if I do something similar on my blog? They are mostly casual hats, but I think they’re fun!

Meg, I love all your hats! When in Michigan, I wore stylish hats in winter and loved them. Phoenix is hot (and very casual); I sometimes wear a straw hat with a wide, turned up brim. My daughter and one of my daughters-in-law, each, wear hats very well, whether summer or winter, but they’re 20+ years younger than I and can “pull it off.” [Sigh] Maybe if I made it a habit, it wouldn’t look “odd.” Desert Lady

Welcome Desert Lady,
Thanks! I love how hats are great no matter what the season, whether they’re keeping your head warm or keeping the sun off.
I’m glad to hear that your daughter and daughter-in-law wear hats. I’m sure you can pull them off well, too. Sometimes it does take a little getting used to, though, like a new haircut.

Several years ago we went to a restaurant in the Chicago area. In the waiting room they had a beautiful collection of lady’s hats with a sign saying that it was OK to try them on. My mother-in-law, daughter, and I had so much fun trying on different hats.

Charla,
That’s such a neat idea! If I ever have a restaurant, I’ll have to do that.

Thanks for the link to this page! On you, I like the black and the green best. (Personally I’m coveting the blue and purple ones.) Good on you for wearing hats - rock it hard!

Hi Meg!
Thanks so much for sharing your hat shots! I’ve always loved hats but have never really had the nerve to wear anything other than a baseball cap. However, this year, I’ve really been drawn to all of the newsboys and fedoras and have decided that it’s time to jump in and try the water! So, I was in Saks about a month ago and tried on a very cute Burberry newsboy style black wool hat and I was smitten! Now, I’m looking for a cute fedora and maybe some additional newsboy styles.
I love the green and purple on you. I have auburn hair and hazel/green eyes and both of those would be great colors for me. You’ve got absolutely gorgeous skin so that hats are even more flattering on such a pretty face too! Sigh….I wish I was still that young! But, I’m very young at heart so I’m hoping that I can still pull them off in my 40’s.
I’m still searching online for some great hats. If you find any, I’d love to hear about them! Please feel free to email me! I’ll be happy to share as well. Enjoy your hats and keep wearing them! I’ve always been a big fan of films from the 30’s, 40’s & 50’s and it’s great to see some of the wonderful hats from those periods showing up again. I just hope that really do come back in style….and, not just on the runway. I live in San Francisco and I haven’t seen many women wearing hats but I think it’s nice to step outside of the box and be brave enough to have your own style. Hope you’ll keep sharing more great hats! Thanks, Nanc

Welcome Nancy!
Thank you for such sweet words! I’m so excited to hear that you’re getting into hats. Fedoras and newsboy hats are great styles, and easy to wear, too. While I haven’t seen a lot of hats around here, either, it hasn’t stopped me from enjoying them. We can be style setters together :)
You’re right that purple and green would look great on you. (I’m very familiar with the coloring. My husband and his mom are both redheads, and I’ve dyed my own hair auburn on numerous occasions.)
Please do share if you come across any great hats. I’ll keep you in mind when I’m looking, as well. I’m hoping to find some and post them on thebargainqueen.com, the other blog that I write for.
Hope to see you around!

I love hats as well! I love the whole look you’re wearing with the black hat. Very “day at the races.” Unfortunately, I don’t have anything to go to (wedding, christening, etc) so no place to wear a great hat. . .but I keep buying them anyway.

Thanks : )
I’m like you, I don’t have too many places to where them, but that doesn’t stop me. I’ve worn the black one a few times window shopping — once in Asheville, N.C. and another time in London.
No one has to no that we didn’t just come from a fantastic party ; )
