Introducing the Smiths

By Meg | December 30, 2007

There’s a really good post over at There But For The Grace of God called Introducing the Smiths.

The post is rather long, but it’s definitely worth reading, especially if you’ve ever looked down on others for their spending habits — and haven’t we all? It’s another great reminder that appearances can be deceiving, and that we shouldn’t be quick to judge.

Here’s an excerpt:

Most everyone knows the Joneses, right? The couple or family who lead many of us to drain our bank accounts and please our creditors in our efforts to keep up with their increasingly glamorous–and expensive–lives.

You may know the Joneses, but have you met The Smiths? I’d venture a guess that you are, in fact, acquainted with the Smiths, even if you don’t realize it just yet.

Just who are the Smith family? Unlike The Joneses, The Smiths don’t make us feel bad about ourselves. They don’t drive drive us to spend, spend, spend, or have, have, have. In fact, The Smiths allow us to feel quite good about our financial choices and habits. Too good, perhaps.

I think my blogging resolution for the new year should be to work on my wordinesss! The thing is, since it doesn’t come naturally for me, that would mean time spent on editing, which I really can’t afford right now. I guess I could benefit from learning how to be more concise right off the bat.

But I’m glad you read the post anyway, despite the length. Thanks so much for mentioning it.

And, by the way,I’ve got your blog added to my Google reader now–so glad you commented on mine, since that lead me to your blog.

Welcome to my blog M!

I totally understand! When I started blogging I was still pretty wordy (a bad habit I picked up in school, I’m afraid). I still get to rambling at times, but I think I’m doing better.

When you have time, you might want to check out a book called Write Tight. It helped me a lot. As a result, even editing takes less time.

I’ve been blogging for years now–and writing for most of my life–so I don’t have much of an excuse for myself! I’m just wordy. And esp. with blogging, it’s largely due to the fact that I use writing as a way to think and sort out my thoughts, rather than think, plan, then write.

Plus, with blogging, I don’t edit. I just write, correct spelling and typos, and then publish in one sitting (as I’m sure many do). So that book might help if it gets me writing more succinctly from the start, since editing is not gonna happen anytime soon! Thanks for the recommendation.

Oh yes, that’s definitely a common blogging habit! I admit that I hardly ever do any serious editing on this blog. I usually write and publish in the same sitting, too. I ‘edit’ as I write, then take a look at the preview, then maybe go back and trim or break up length paragraphs.

I also use blogging, and writing in general, as a way to “sort out my thoughts”. I’ve actually been writing online since ‘97, but blogging is still fairly new to me, with the exception of some personal things I’ve written on social networking sites.
