How to wear black without looking boring
By Meg | September 24, 2007
While I love bright colors, I can’t deny how useful black is; whether it’s stealing the spotlight or acting as a classy backdrop to other colors, black is the classic neutral. However, black can be… well.. rather bland. Few people can wear black from head to toe without looking tired or like they’re on the way to a funeral.
It doesn’t have to be that way, though. Black can be fun, sexy, and stylish - if you know how to use it.
Add color
An easy way to liven up black is simply to add in other colors. Bright colors will still pop against a black background but without being overpowering. If you feel like you can’t wear a certain color, try it paired with some black which will help balance it out.
For a super classy look, pair black with other neutrals. Yes, you can mix black and brown, or black and navy. My favorite trick, though, is to wear white accessories with a mostly black outfit like my black dress with white polka dots. Just wearing white shoes instead of black brightens up the entire outfit. Then I add in white enamel jewelry and a white purse and voilà - it’s a cheery day outfit.
Balance out your makeup
If you’re pale like I am, chances are that wearing black makes your complexion look a bit sallow. In that case, it’s important to add color to your face using makeup. If you’re used to wearing a ‘natural’ face, it might be hard to adjust your makeup at first. However, darkening your makeup will make a huge difference. So, lay on the blush, bring out the mascara, and paint those pouty lips red.
Avoid plain, black items
It seems that every woman has at least one pair of plain, black shoes and at least one plain, black purse. Some women have more than one of each since it’s easy to get into the trap of buying too many items that are too versatile. While it’s great to have black accessories, there is no reason for any of them to be completely plain and uninteresting.
They’re black, they’re going to match just about everything, so invest in black accessories that have great details like a bit of sparkle, or a bow, or a subtle pattern. Look for jackets with fur (or faux fur) trim. Black laces and ribbons make a great addition to many items. Look for black shirts that have great buttons or sleeves, or a great collar. Although it’s generally best to keep black pants rather simple, make sure that they fit great and that the cut is flattering for your shape.
It’s about attitude
However you wear black, do it with attitude. The difference between looking tired or looking vivacious is to a large extent in your body and facial language. When you wear black, it’s even more important. So, when you slip on that little black dress, make sure to do it with a great, big smile.

Great post! Adding more interesting details is very useful advice.
I love black & white together for spring, with a flattering color like red or pink added. :)
