How our cats are staying warm this winter

By Meg | January 3, 2008

In an effort to save some money and live a little greener, my husband and I have kept the thermostat set a little lower this winter. The cats have definitely noticed:

Kitty Huddle

Don’t feel bad for them, though. It’s still in the mid to high 60s inside, so they aren’t exactly freezing. The do appreciate the electric mattress pad in the evening, though.

The little drama queen in back is our finicky girl Sunshine. The kitty at front left is Katrina. Her favorite hobbies are eating, sleeping, and carrying on long conversations. Despite her size, she’s actually the youngest. And there to the right is our first cat, Felix. Yep, that’s the one that cost us nearly a grand a week and a half ago when he ate some stuff he shouldn’t have. He’s been a very expensive “free” kitty, but he’s my little boy and we’re so glad that he’s back to his healthy, happy self.

Not pictured is C.C. We’re cat-sitting her indefinitely for my husband’s brother. She’s a very sweet tabby. While she now gets along with the other cats pretty well, and has recently started laying on the bed with them, but she hasn’t quite become part of the kitty huddle yet. Instead, she’s become a lap kitty, which is just fine with us.

LOVE the black & white of the cats against the blanket. Nice pic.

Thanks, Miss Janey!

Of course, I would have color-coordinated cats — though I swear it just happened that way.

And to get them all looking at me, I found that the trick is to sing just the first tone of their call to food. It definitely gets their attention.

Hi Diana! I bet! All of us here, cats and humans, love our electric mattress pad. And my husband has been so sweet; he’s thought to turn it on before we have to get into bed. That way we don’t have to wait for it to warm up while shivering between cold sheets.
