How I’m staying warm for less

By Meg | December 28, 2007

Last month the weather was cool enough that we didn’t have to run the air conditioner much at all. As a result, my husband and I finally saw a dip in our electric bill. This month, though, it’s gotten nippy enough that we’ve had to turn on the heat.

Having seen how much we saved by not using the air conditioner, I’ve been trying hard not to turn the heat up any more than necessary. So, I’ve been wearing my yoga pants, toe socks, and sweaters around the house for a change (I also have a pair of long, fingerless gloves on the way). Unfortunately, I’m rather cold-natured, so covering up is usually not enough even when it’s just in the 60s.

At night, my husband and I have been using an electric mattress pad, allowing us to keep the thermostat low at night. That thing is wonderful! I had never used one before moving in with my husband, and now I don’t know how I survived years of ice-cold sheets.

Tonight, though, I’m sitting here enjoying a new cost-saving, ‘luxury’ — an electric blanket. I picked it up today at Big Lots for just $25. What the heck took me so long?! This has quickly become my absolute favorite blanket ever.

Great tip!!!!!! Do you have a goose down comforter, too? Those retain heat quite nicely.

Thanks Valley Girl!

No, I don’t, but that sounds wonderful! Unfortunately, it’s not consistently cold here, so it’s not worth it for us to change our bedding much. That’s why it’s so nice to have things that can be turned off and on depending on the weather.

I’ve heard about those.. they use them in Japan (sort of), called kohatsus? kotatsus? something like that.

But I’m kind of afraid the electricity will catch on fire and burn me in my sleep :\

I know the feeling, FB! I’m very paranoid about electricity at times, but these things are really safe as far as I know. I guess anything could happen, but I’m a lot more wary of driving.
