Re: How does one get the polished look?
By Meg | January 1, 2008
Allie at Wardrobe Oxygen recently wrote a response to the oft-asked question How does one get the polished look?.
She’s got some great advice, so do check it out. I particularly liked this bit:
Stop purchasing prints. A few prints tossed in every so often are great, but polished women are those decked out predominately in solids. A solid blue sweater will look more polished than a striped one, a simple white shirt will get you more miles and compliments than a paisley one, and a black pencil skirt will look far more elegant than a purple tweed one with a satin-trimmed hem.
So true! It might be tempting to buy that busy blouse, thinking that you’re getting more for your money than if you bought ‘just’ a basic, solid top. However, that basic top is a much better deal since you’ll likely wear it a lot more and it’ll look better. I’m finally getting into the habit of buying basic tops, but I wish I had known that years ago, before clogging the closet with patterned shirts that I rarely wear.
If I could add just two things to her post, if would be to go easy on the jewelry and take care of your nails. In both cases, simpler looks tend to look more polished than flashy ones.

GREAT advice, Miss Meg, especially for busty dames like Miss Janey… Each time she buys a print, she ends up sooo much time trying to find something to go with it when it comes time to dress in the morning.

My goodness! How do you know where I wrote about you? You were on it before I could even tell you about it! LOL!
I love your blog.
And about prints… I think if you just can’t resist something printed, make sure everything else in your outfit is basic & neutral.

Hi Margaret! Welcome — even though you’ve obviously been a reader : )
I use WordPress and it automatically pings me when people link to the blog. Sometimes it takes its sweet time, but I guess not in this case.
I’m so glad that you love the blog. It’s so nice to hear from readers.
And I definitely agree with you on prints. Prints can work, but one had better have plenty of basic, neutral items to wear with them.

Thanks, Miss Janey! I’m definitely understand that feeling, being fairly busty myself (even post-reduction).

Yes, definitely a good point about prints versus basics. I am trying to learn this hard lesson and pass up all the pretty printed summer skirts that attract me, but totally highlight my pear-shape! A print should be where you want to look bigger! I have just found your blog (via Gauri’s That Dress is Divine) and am enjoying it, many thanks.

Hi Kiran and welcome to the site!
I’m so glad that you’re enjoying it. It’s always such a pleasure to hear from readers. And many thanks to Gauri for sending you my way : )
You’re so right — prints do tend to make an area look bigger! I love those printed summer skirts too, but they don’t do much for me, either (though there are still some print skirts that I haven’t given up yet).
