Getting geeky in Austin

By Meg | March 3, 2008

The rumors are true, I really am a nerd — and proud of it.

Friday, I’ll be headed to the South by Southwest Interactive festival and conference in Austin, Texas. I’ll be in town until the 11th, along with The Bargain Queen herself, Sara.

I plan on having lots of fun, learning all sorts of new things, and most importantly, meeting new people. So, if by chance you’re going to be in the area and want to meet up, just let me know and I’ll see what I can work out.

In the meantime, I have hardly even thought about what to pack because I’m currently busy being a college band nerd and practicing for two concerts this Thursday — including my début as a solo jazz vocalist.

Despite having written an entire series on traveling in style, I’m actually quite nervous about what to wear on my trip. So, please, if you have any tips for what to wear to Austin or to tech conferences in general, I’m all ears (though I should say now that I don’t care much for pants). Plus, I’m always looking for good tips on packing light — if only so I have room to bring way more shoes and handbags than I need.

The conference center is big, and you may end up walking quite a bit between sessions. I recommend comfy shoes.

Austin is extremely casual. You don’t need heels or hose or make-up to do anything. Well, except play certain roles if you are in a play. It’s okay to carry around a knapsack, totebag, or other huge monstrosity if you think it will be convenient, too.

Check the weather before you leave. This week is unseasonably cool, and spring is a wacky time of year. You might want to consider layering. Note: even if it’s hot outside, it will be plenty cool inside. All public buildings have air conditioning, and most are over air-conditioned.

One final note. It’s been extremely windy the past couple of weeks: not the greatest weather for wrap dresses (sorry, Fabulously Broke!).

Thanks for such great advice, Debbie!

But it is a shame about the wind because I loooove wrap dresses, too, FB!

Thanks again, Debbie! I took some thicker, longer skirts and they’ve worked well. I wore one dress on the plane, but I forgot to take into account that I’d have to walk outside to the plane because it was tiny. I had to hold my dress down, but I don’t think I flashed anyone.

Oops!

I’m glad I could help. You certainly help me enough. (Mm, should check into flat boots instead of sneakers.)

I’m so glad to here that I’ve been of help to you, Debbie!

Definitely check out some flat boots. I found them remarkably comfy, and a lot easier to dress up than sneakers.
