Flip flops and alternatives

By Meg | June 8, 2007

I have a confession to make… I am a flip flop addict.

I live in Florida, in a particularly casual town. I once had a friend from Miami visit and go, “Everyone is wearing flip flops. Don’t they know that is sooooo last season?!” Flip flops never, ever, go out of season here - which isn’t a bad thing for me since I happen to have a couple dozen pairs. For me, they have been a cheap way to help beat the heat and show a bit of flare. I have flip flops in many different colors and styles. I also have found a lot of pairs that are very, very comfortable - unlike the flip flops I wore as a kid. That’s good since until recently I had to traverse a very large college campus. Flip flops became my staple shoe, normally worn with skirts, capris, or crop pants.

I know that flip flops are very casual, and for some people they are about on the level of Crocs. I disagree, of course, but I have had to acknowledge that flip flops are not the most stylish choice when it comes to flats. Since graduating I have started wearing ballet flats. I wish I had worn them in college, but for the most part that was before they were really big here. Unfortunately, I’ve not had good luck wearing them with capris or crop pants or any other type of shorts. I suppose skimmers would be a good choice there, but I haven’t found a pair that I like (the soles are too thick or the colors are all wrong or they’re too plain). Espadrilles are also a great flip flop replacement since they work with shorts and skirts, but I haven’t found them to be quite as comfortable after a long day of walking. There are of course regular, flat sandals. However, I haven’t seen many in stores that I would wear. My major complaint with the sandals available right now is that the straps tend to be very wide. I want dainty sandals that are pretty and feminine.

What do you think of flip flops for casual wear? What alternatives do you prefer to wear with summer skirts and shorts?
