Fashion deal breakers: toe claw and my burgundy heels

By Meg | February 19, 2008

There are certain things that I just won’t tolerate in my wardrobe.

One of them is toe claw.

It’s a huge pet peeve for me, to the point where I carefully inspect my open toe shoes for the slightest bit of overhang. Most of my shoes are closed-toe because even if they look o.k. when I buy them, I know that my toes will likely be hanging ten over the front in no time.

Right now, there is a pair of otherwise gorgeous, burgundy shoes in the donate pile waiting for me to take them to Goodwill. Why? Because after wearing them for a couple hours, my feet had shifted forward in the shoes and voilà, toe claw. Reluctantly, I added them to the donate pile as soon as I got home. They really are such pretty shoes… and I have a belt that matches (not that I’ve worn it yet). But I don’t think that there is anything that will help in this case and that’s just one line I don’t cross.

Meanwhile, I’ve been flipping through fashion magazines and taking note of how many ads show overhanging toes. With all the staging and airbrushing that goes into those ads, is there any excuse? Or does it not even matter? Is toe overhang perfectly acceptable?

Have you tried some insoles that might grip your feet to keep them from sliding forward?

Something like “Foot Petals”:

(check out the description on those “tip toes”!

No.. not acceptable at all.

But I’ve tried those insole grips and they kinda work but kinda don’t…

Hi Shopaphilia,

I haven’t tried them on this pair specifically, but I’ve used them before. Like Fabulously Broke said, “they kinda work but kinda don’t”. When there is just a little overhang, they are sometimes enough, but I highly suspect that this pair is just too far gone.

Hi Fabulously Broke,

Glad to know! I’d hate to sacrifice my shoes for nothing.

I also don’t find this acceptable, but have the opposite problem. I have small feet (5.5 to 6.5 depending on the snobbishness of the designer) and often find that my toes (which are also short) don’t “peep” through peeptoes (which you can see from my blog are some of my favorites!). Ah well, I am a big fan of small feet because along with the 10s, they’re the last pairs to go and so are easier to nab on sale.

I don’t like the way I walk in that style. Ugh.

Well, at least you’ve found an upside, Anastasia! A while back I was wishing that I was a 10 because an absolutely lovely pair of shoes was only left in that size and a few larger. As a 9, I rarely see good shoes in my size on clearance.

Me neither, Mrs. Micah!

Eeew. Toe claw. No, definitely NOT acceptable in Miss J’s book.
