Fashion and climate preferences

By Meg | December 18, 2007

My husband and I both took the quiz at Find Your Spot to see where in the U.S. it thinks we should live. One issue we’ve had is that he likes the heat and I like the cold. In fact, the city we live in came up as a choice for him! Apparently, I’d be happier in Connecticut.

Two nights ago we finally had a cold front and the past two nights it has gotten down into the 30s. This morning, the power went out for an hour and boy did I notice. I realized, I actually hate being cold, just about as much as I hate being hot. Maybe I even dislike it more.

So then I got thinking about why I want to live somewhere cold and I realized that it probably has to do with fashion, makeup, and hair choices!

I hate and won’t even wear shorts, I detest spaghetti strap tops and tube tops, I don’t care much for flip flops (though I wear them anyway to stay cool), I hate chafing as I drown in sweat, I hate my makeup melting off my face midday, and I can’t stand to have my hair down when it’s remotely warm. And I really can’t stand how many people wear skimpy, see-through clothes with nothing under them! I’d look forward to cold temperatures if only to see less of those outfits and fewer Crocs!

Things I love? Gloves, hats, scarves, sweaters (so long as they aren’t pull overs), dark colors, and boots. I like being able to keep my hair down, even if it takes some getting used to, and I definitely like it when I can wear as much makeup as I want without having to worry about what it will look when I get out the door.

Granted, I like dresses and skirts, but I’ve never had problems wearing them in the cold (i.e. 30s) even without tights and I wouldn’t mind adding tights or stockings underneath if need be.

And even though it’s winter and cooler now, day time temperatures will still regularly climb to the 70s and 80s. That means that I have to plan where I’ll put all those layers that I peel off at lunchtime.

So, I’m curious, how do you feel about the climate where you live? Does it work with your style or against it?

I’m very much a moderate girl myself, with Spring and Autumn being my ideal “fashion seasons.” In Indiana, it’s currently a high in the 20s! When it gets that cold, the ground is caked with ice, I feel that fashion kind of takes a backseat as well. Warm coats really aren’t always stylish, and god forbid we find a pair of fashionable & practical boots (erm, you can see my choices on that front ;) ). While scarves and hats can be great, the necessary bulk to keep one warm when it’s 20 outside can be annoying. God forbid I lived any further North!
