Discount stores aren’t just for cheap clothing

By Meg | August 2, 2007

Today I went shopping with a friend. We hit the mall, then T.J. Maxxx and Ross, two of the local discount clothing stores. All in all, it was a great shopping day. I bought two cute dresses for about $20 each, and another for about $30. I even managed to find a pair of nice charcoal slacks for my husband for $20. My friend even found a great black leather purse for about $20. One of my best finds, though, wasn’t something to wear. It was a hair iron.

I’ve been searching for a nice hair iron for some time. The one I have been using will be going out in the garbage tomorrow because it takes forever to heat up, isn’t ceramic, and at its hottest is still easily touchable with my finger. I’ve been making do with my hair dryer and a good brush, but it’s not the same. To get a polished look, you have to have the right tools. I probably should have gotten a new hair iron years ago, but with so many choices at such high prices, it was hard for me to commit to buying one. Today, though, I found the Vidal Sassoon tourmaline hair iron featured to the left - for $11.99 at Ross. It’s nice since it has a curved barrel to do flips and the inside ‘flat’ iron actual has a slight curve to it which gives hair the extra bit of volume and shape that I need. At that price, I figured I couldn’t go too wrong, and I know Ross has a good return policy. I bought it. When I got home, I tried it out, and my husband even noticed the difference when he got home. Then we went grocery shopping. Despite the rain I walked through on the way to and from the car, my hair is still remarkably straight and fairly frizz free. For $11.99 I really did get a good flat iron. (By the way, the Amazon.com price is still better than what I’ve seen at some other stores around town.)

The lesson of this story is that you can find a lot of great discounts at stores known mostly for their discounted clothing. At Ross, I’ve also managed to buy yoga mats for less $5, a Cuisinart coffee maker, books, jewelry, videos, throw pillows, a couch slip cover, photo albums… and plenty of other things that help me keep up appearances on a budget. So, don’t snub discount stores. Even if you don’t find clothes you want, take a look at their other departments. The inventory tends to be quite variable, but that’s half the fun and the deals can be great.

Indeed, many wonderful items can be found at discount stores. One of my favorite parts is the compliments I get afterwards, and knowing that they came at a fraction of the cost than they appear!
