Closet show and tell
By Meg | October 3, 2007
I’m very happy to see that so many people have enjoyed seeing my hat collection, so I thought I’d do a little more show and tell. I happen to be very proud of my closet. My husband and I remodelled it ourselves. One friend said… well, I won’t say what she called it for fear that some search engines might think that this is another kind of girlie site, but she was quite impressed. I’m already planning some posts on The Bargain Queen about organizing one’s closet, so I’ll keep the explanation here a bit short. So, without further ado, here’s my two thirds of our closet.
Here on the right side, you’ll notice a couple things. First off, I keep my shoes in plastic boxes stacked on and below the bottom shelf. Most of my clothes hang on stackable hangers, so I have the pole higher up than in most closets I’ve seen. Behind the clothes, you can see that I have some flat bags on hangers. On the very right, the pole is even higher so that I can store my dresses and some jackets. Above the pole is the top shelf where I store seasonal clothes, costumes, and sentimental stuff in boxes and those extra large Ziploc bags.
Here’s a picture of the top of the left side of my closet area. As you can see, I use sliding baskets and the shelves above them to hold some of my clothes and accessories. The bottom drawer is for gym clothes and general around-the-house clothes. The basket above holds my smaller bags. Some of my jeans are on the shelves, but my nicer pairs are hanging just to the right. Beyond that are two belt hangers and two scarf hangers.
Finally, here’s the bottom of the left side of my closet area. I store my flip flops in the purple bins. Right now, only three are full since I pared them down a bit. Flip flops aren’t the most stylish kind of shoe, but I am a Florida girl after all.
No, in case you’re wondering, this is not my entire wardrobe. I also have one large dresser and a small two drawer dresser with things like socks, undies, sweaters, night gowns and various other items. There’s also a couple jackets and a bathrobe on the back of the bedroom door. Plus I keep some of my more formal stuff in another closet along with some items that I need to have tailored. And finally, there’s a stack of shoe boxes in the hallway reminding me that they need some work or cleaning.

Okay - I officially feel bad about (1) how much clothing I have and (2) how much of our home’s closet space I hog. You are so neat and compact!

Hi Kasmira,
Make sure you read that last paragraph… that’s far from my entire wardrobe.
And don’t feel bad about having lots of clothing. It’s a great thing to have so many options.
By the way, the neatness lasted for about 4 hours until I needed something to wear and pulled out half of my closet trying to decide.
Also, the stackable hangers help SOOOOOOOO much.

I have a free website where you can take pictures of your clothes & arrange them into outfits. We are in beta-testing and I would love to see what you think about it. http://fashionmash.com

Welcome Valley Girl!
I love them too. They give me a lot more room to work with and I can organize things vertically by color or style when I’ve been bitten by the organization bug.
Believe it or not, I got them at Ross. They weren’t super cheap (about $1 a piece), but they were a lot more reasonable there than elsewhere.

[…] When my husband and I remodeled our closet, I learned a lot about creating and maintaining a functional closet — and discovered that size truly doesn’t matter! If you want, you can see the results on my personal blog. […]
