Call me a box of crayons
By Meg | January 28, 2008
So, I’ve been going crazy for color this season. Actually, it started this time last year — during the season of black and white. My closet is still recovering since that’s when I bought a lot of my current wardrobe. And the mustard yellow summer we had didn’t help me one bit since that shade makes me look sickly.
Don’t get me wrong, I love neutrals. I have a lot of black and gray in my wardrobe and that’s fine. However, I love adding colorful accessories to the mix. Unfortunately, most people seem to want neutral accessories that will go with everything and that’s what I see the most of whenever I go shopping. I have a lot of neutral clothes, though. Ergo, I don’t need many neutral accessories.
Even one of my New Year’s resolutions was to add more color to my wardrobe. The color I do have is mostly blues and purples in rather calm shades. So I’ve been looking for colorful accessories.
Well, today I found some color!
One piece was a gorgeous fuchsia trench coat. Another was a bright yellow jacket. Then there was a pair of purple capris and a hunter green bag. Had they had them in my size, I probably would have gotten a pair of pink pumps (something I’ve been wanting for months). I had even managed to get some electric blue nail polish at the pharmacy earlier in the day.
I wish I had a camera with me earlier, though, because when I came out of the dressing room I was wearing my electric blue heels, the purple capris, a bright green shirt, the yellow jacket, and electric blue nails. I was colorful, to say the least. And while I don’t know if I could go out in such an outfit, it felt really good.
The odd thing is, I normally can’t wear pinks and yellows. And while I recently wrote about how to work difficult colors into your wardrobe, I had just about given up on wearing either color in large amounts. So in my book, the jacket and coat are pretty darn miraculous.
All in all, I couldn’t be happier with my choices. After all, wearing colorful outerwear and accessories is actually a pretty economical way to work a lot of color into your everyday wardrobe. I’ll get way more use out of them than I would a yellow blouse or a fuchsia skirt.
I think this is going to be a great year.

Meg, I like your fuchsia trench coat. And that was such a great bargain!!
Years ago, I had a three-piece outfit that was a little bit deeper fuchsia color, and it was one of my favorite outfits. I received several compliments on it and I think because there’s something about that color that works well with my skin tone.

Thanks, Charla!
I’m definitely in love with dark fuchsias right now. It’s so great to find strong colors that work with one’s skin tone. I’m sure your outfit was absolutely fabulous!
