A moment of strength and scissors

By Meg | December 30, 2007

I did it. Despite recently telling people that I can’t believe they’re planning to give up credit cards as their New Year’s resolutions, I willingly handed my American Express card over to my husband to be cut up. But first, I deleted all my credit card information on Amazon. I don’t know which is scarier.

I’ve been trying really hard to change my habits, but I realized that I’d have to make some significant changes.

Now, it’s not quite as drastic as it seems. I do still have a Chase Visa card with no balance, but I hate using it and will only use it for emergencies. I also have a debit card, though I try to put most of my money towards the American Express card just as soon as I get it. And of course, my husband still has his credit cards.

Let’s see how this goes.

I only have one credit card (for emergencies) and one debit card, too. Its wonderful. It really forces you to think before you spend.

I bet! I’ve had as many as five cards, I think. One I never used, though. And of the remaining four, I’ve only been using the Amex so the others have no balance on them. Thank goodness!

Of course, that doesn’t count my husband’s cards. As far as his personal expenses go, he’s been really good. However, I tend to help him run up the cards on his side, too.

Thanks FB! Yeah, nowadays it is hard to live totally sans credit cards, so I’m by no means cutting up my Visa — just in case I get stuck.

My husband definitely couldn’t live without his since he often has to charge work expenses and sometimes they take their sweet time repaying him.
